What non-monetary benefits motivate employees the most?
Fruit Thursdays have long ceased to be an attractive form of benefit, much like sports cards, which in most large companies, along with private medical care, have become standard. However, it is not true that employees do not value benefits – additional perks are still appreciated, but attention is now directed towards different conveniences and forms of support from employers. What non-salary benefits motivate employees the most in 2024?
Support for work-life balance as a non-salary benefit
Work-life balance is not just a hollow phrase – it is an extremely important aspect emphasized not only by employees and psychologists but also by employers themselves. Not only do foreign scientific studies but also the experience of many entrepreneurs show that an overworked employee is less productive than a well-rested one. They are also more motivated to work for the company. Employers can support employees' work-life balance through various benefits:
- Care package – This package can include subsidizing a few hours of childcare per month; in our case, it is also possible to purchase a few hours of pet care for employees.
- Additional vacation days – For birthdays, name days, or just because.
- Remote or hybrid work – Post-pandemic, this has become somewhat of a standard, although some companies invite employees back to the office; it’s worth being flexible and listening to employee needs.
- Attractive relaxation zones at the workplace – Interesting amenities allow employees not only to de-stress but also to integrate with other colleagues.
Non-salary benefits that support employee health
It is unnecessary to convince anyone that health is one of the most important values in our lives. It is also well-known that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, employer support for employee health is a highly valued type of non-salary benefit. In addition to the mentioned sports cards and private medical care, it is worth offering:
- Dietitian support
- Psychologist support
- Subsidy for healthy meals – This can be combined with regular cooking classes.
- Program rewarding employees who commute by bike – This can be combined with subsidies for purchasing a bike; infrastructure for cyclists (safe bike storage at work) is also necessary.
New expectations for non-salary benefits
New expectations regarding non-salary benefits arise from generational changes in companies. Generation Z points to a new approach to professional development – and generations X and Y are keen to adopt the best practices from their younger colleagues. Therefore, supporting physical and mental health, as well as work-life balance, is not about following temporary trends but about adapting to a new quality that allows employees to be more effective at work and happier in life.
